The building is comparatively new--from the late 1970s. The building, however, is very poorly maintained, and inside the clinic looks completely neglected. The restrooms are in a horrible state: dirty, excrements and urine on the floor, doors missing, no faucets. Some of the offices serve as private medical offices. From my personal experience of several days ago I testify that the doctors there are not in white gowns. Some treat the patients as milking cows: they overprescribe medications in their state hospitals, but take the honorarium in their private offices. A few days ago I had such a case by a doctor who works both in a leadings state hospital, and at the same time, has a private office in this policlinic. It seems that by overprescribing he insures himself but at the cost of my health, since the side effects of the medication that he prescribed are horrendous. The professional medical sites I consulted underscore that fact that what he prescribed is not the way to treat my condition. Was the diagnosis of this doctor correct? After taking a second, more qualified medical opinion, it turned out that the diagnosis was wrong to begin with. It is possible overprescribing to be a general practice because Bulgarian doctors (as in the countries with commercial medical care) get some benefits from the pharmaceutical industry. Interestingly, when I tried to return the unnecessary medications to the pharmacy where I bought it, the pharmacy refused to take the unopened boxes back referring to a rule by the Ministry of Health. Thus, I suspect that the doctors, the pharmaceutical industry, and the Ministry reap off criminal benefits by overprescribing medications that cannot be returned. (The equation is why unopened medications cannot be returned. what is the rationale, if not a purely speculative one?) Medical care in Bulgaria, especially the state one, stinks of corruption, which is so brutally obvious that one is stupefied by the way the medical professionals treat him as a fool and an easy pray. The dishonesty of the medical profession in Bulgaria (as in many other countries where health care is paid and commercial) is rampant--or a group of dishonest medics throws its deep shadow over the honest and competent professionals. Since I've been able to be treated in Bulgarian private hospitals as well, I could testify that the difference in quality between state and private hospitals and clinics is enormous. Yet, there should be no difference. In sum, I'm shocked by corruption and neglect of state health institutions, including this policlinic. Since I've been served by the same policlinic since childhood--when things were much better--I could recommend the leadership of the policlinic to fix the problems that are disgustingly blatant.

Some personnel tries to be nice but being constantly overworked, underappreciated and shouted does not help much. Facilities are ancient. No English is spoken. You need to see the registration desk first. Some physicians ask for appointments to be made in advance. Good luck.
